Two Storey Garages Victory & Glastonbury Double storey garages have a variety of uses. Guest bedrooms, Home offices, Granny flats, Hobby rooms, Workshops or indeed anything else you can think of. The Glastonbury design has the roof turned 90° so the parking bays are under the gable end. They can be insulated for all year round use or left as uninsulated storage space. Garages with rooms above would normally have gabled ends or barn hips - sometimes called Dutch hips as fully hipped roofs will substantially reduce the usable space. A range of different frame sections can give a variety of different garage buildings from single bay garages through to multi complex structures. There are a few ways of increasing the floor space at first floor without increasing the building footprint. A raised plate adds a second eaves beam which effectively raises the roof by 280mm which gives a surprising amount of extra headroom for very little cost. Our Royal garage frames add extra height at the rear whilst still keeping the roof at the front at the lower eaves level. Our Knightwood garage frames include a cruck frame giving the eaves level an extra metre in height which gives a much more usable space at first floor. A cruck frame is a type of timber framing characterized by its use of large, curved timbers to support the roof of a building. This architectural style was historically prominent in England and Wales, particularly during the medieval period. The "Blades" are the defining feature of a cruck frame, they are a pair of long, curved timbers. These blades are typically made by splitting a single, naturally curved tree trunk in half to create two symmetrical pieces. The blades lean inwards, meeting at the top to form an A-shaped frame. The posts are often secured by a horizontal beam, which further reinforces the A-shape. A full cruck extends from the foundation near the ground all the way to the ridge of the roof, we use a base cruck where blades are truncated by the first transverse member, such as a tie beam.
